We used this lace on the poster of our lace exhibition in 1990 (see poster in home page)

“Punto in Aria” it means exactly stitch in the air, at that time (sixteenth and seventeenth century) Italy was the leader in the production of needlepoint laces, this lace was taken all the nobility, and the churches of Europe by storms, those that could afforded have to have it, it was one of the most expensive luxuries of that time, knowing the endless hours of painstaking labour in highly uncomfortable cow byres, where the moist warmth emanating from the cows below kept the fine flax thread supple and the hands of lace makers from becoming stiff with cold. Some workers only made 24 inches in a whole year.

Before that all work was done by cutting, puling thread, and piercing cloth, and decorated with a needle, so when someone started making lace with just a thread in buttonhole stitch that’s was quite a new discovery, and one can say that that was the beginning of lace as one know it today, needle and bobbin. Needlepoint was a derivative of embroidery; bobbin lace was a derivative of weaving.

This fantastic length of lace Punto in Aria dates from around 1600, in my opinion shows the influence of Islamic art, very much a trade rout with the Venetians.

Provenance: Pat Earnshaw collection of lace
Antique lace (page two) stock no.H81JSA1
is a very fine flounce of Point de France lace, it dates from the late 17th century. This fine lace flounce is shown on the book "The Identification of Lace" by Pat Earnshaw page 50. In the book this lace is described as being part of a collar and not a flounce. We have examined this lace and it has been altered at some stage in the 18th or 19th century. Part of this lace has a narrow edge at the top added to it, but at other stages of the lace it is completed (like a lappet) at both sides. One can clearly see the fault in the book elutriation at the top. It is difficult to see the original shape of this piece. Anyway it is a very fine and beautiful length of Point de France.
